What are the best vehicles for rural letter carriers to drive on their mail routes?

Rural mail routes cover long distances, travelling on dirt (sometimes very bumpy) and gravel roads. Vehicles must often travel on highways as part of same route. Center consoles get in the way of storing and handling mail. Perferably with a split bench front seat and 4WD or AWD. Must be mechanically sound.

  1. I would go with an suv. i recomend a jeep cherokee or explorer
  2. I live in a rural area and my mail carrier drives a 4x4 chevrolet s-10 extended cab pickup
  3. You make want to check into a Subaru. When I worked for a Subaru dealer service department, they used to offer a right hand drive Legacy station wagon (driver located on right side of car) for sale in the US. No major parts differences on the vehicle except of course for the dash and suspension parts. It does have to be special ordered however it does have bucket seats.
  4. I would check with your local Jeep dealer. My mail carrier uses Jeep Cherokees that are right and left hand drive. They have controls on both sides. Also the drivetrain is very dependable.
  5. Subaru is by far the most reliable and maintenance free. More economical on gas too.
